Physics
is the foundation of many important disciplines and contributes
directly to others. Chemical science deals with the interactions of
atoms and molecules and hence rooted in atomic and molecular physics.
Most branches of engineering are applied physics. Even in medical
sciences, the latest diagnosis of ailments via imaging techniques, laser
surgery etc., is based on physics. In architecture, physics is at the
heart of structural stability, and is involved in the acoustics,
heating, lighting, and cooling of buildings. Parts of geology rely
heavily on physics, such as radioactive dating of rocks, earthquake
analysis, and heat transfer in the Earth. Some disciplines, such as
biophysics and geophysics, are hybrids of physics and other disciplines.
Physics prepares you for careers as scientists, theoretical physicists,
aeronautical engineers, teachers; in nautical sciences,
telecommunication systems, defense forces and more.
A post-graduate /graduate with Physics can opt for one of the following careers:

Educational Visit to GMRT-NCRA,TIFR, Narayangoan Pune 30/11/2018:
The Department of Physics had organized an educational trip to to GMRT-NCRA,TIFR, Narayangoan, Pune on 30/11/2018: for 21 students of physics department. The main purpose of the visit was to complement holistic education to the students and help them to gain practical and theoretical exposure to space and astrophysics studies. The visit was very interactive and engineers of GMRT explained the entire working of telescope including electronic involved.
Four faculty members of the department accompanied the students in the visit.

“Einsteinium 99 – An element of Physics” is an annual Inter – Collegiate event organized by the Department Of Physics of Mithibai College which provides a platform for the youth to think out of the box and excel the boundaries of their minds. This two - day fest is an outcome of a rare but amazing combination of knowledge and creativity. As you traverse through the wonderful line up of mind boggling exhibits, you will soon realize that your belief of Physics being a headache is a myth and that Physics can actually enhance the “good” brainstorming in you.
It has again been a successful year for Einsteinium 99.
To break the wall that separates each one of us and to unlock the door of curiosity together, the team of Einsteinium 99 had invited all the “non – Physics” departments as well as colleges across Mumbai. And soon, the registration desk got real busy. The dates – 8th and 9th January were all reserved for some fun pre – events. The pre events were Quizzinga, The Untold Saga, Papyrus and The Smartest Brain in the Room. Quizzinga was a stereotype - breaking quiz based on the “pun world” that amuses the youth of today the most, followed by The Untold Saga where oration skills were tested while unknown facts and infamous life stories of scientists came into the limelight. Papyrus, a poster making competition, revealed an undeniably intricate yet beautiful thinking process in an artistic manner. The next day went in hunting for the “Smartest Brain” in the room. The ability to solve simple yet tricky challenges, games that required the right mixture of knowledge and smartness and an unbeatable attitude were the key features that enthrone that person as the one having the “Smartest Brain in the Room”.
“Wait, the fun is not over yet!”
The most awaited tech fest was scheduled on 12th and 13th January 2018. The first floor, Department of Physics was divided into three sections – the Main laboratory and the Dark Room, the Gaming section and the Robotics Section. The aura was set and the day was made perfect with the presence of our honorable Chief Guest, Dr. Vijay A. Singh from Homi Bhabha Centre For Science Education (HBCSE) who is also a Raja Ramanna fellow, Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences. Dr. Singh delivered an appealing lecture on “The Centre of Mass and the Golden Ratio in Physics and Aesthetics” followed by the inaugural ceremony that declared the commencement of the most awaited tech fest.

Light feels extra wonderful when surrounded by the dark. The Dark Room showcased a series of exhibits that were an ultimate treat to the eyes. The Plasma Globe, the LED Cube, the Laser Show, the Hologram and the Infinity Mirror got all the attention! Coming towards the Main Laboratory, the ECG, designed by students themselves was something new this year. The Euler’s Disc made everybody go awestruck! Other exhibits namely the Sterling Engine, the Irrigation System and many more gained equal fame and love. The gaming section felt nothing less than any other gaming zone. “Could you cross the loop, all at once?”
Bluetooth robots hovering around in the corridors kept the aura alive while Jacob’s Ladder, Ring Launcher and Ruhmkorff’s Coil scared and astonished everybody to the core! Speaking of astonishment, the Liquid Nitrogen Show was the only ticketless show that went house – full! A delightful add - on were the food stalls that were set up for the first time in the small yet significant history of Einsteinium 99. And with the prize distribution and the nostalgia lingering around, it was a wrap!
Until then, we wait for another year of astonishment, unbelievable facts and the time when Physics turns fun!

Title: The Centre of Mass and the Golden Ratio in Physics and Aesthetics

The Department of Physics had invited Dr. Vijay A. Singh, an eminent scientist and renowned academician in the field of sciences to deliver a seminar in the field of mechanics and mathematical physics to undergraduate and postgraduate students (as part of their co-curricular activity). Dr. Vijay A. Singh is currently Raja Ramana Fellow at UM-DAE CBS and Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India). He was a Professor of Physics at IIT - Kanpur for over twenty years (1984 - 2005) and then at India’s premier research institute, The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (HBCSE), Mumbai as well as Adjunct Professor at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay.
Prof. Vijay A. Singh oversaw India’s Olympiad efforts as the National Coordinator, Science Olympiads at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai [1998-2014]. He has worked in areas as diverse as nanostructures, semiconductors, and disordered metals, foundations of quantum mechanics, quantum chemistry and science education research. He has over 150 peer -reviewed international scientific publications and has to his credit over 250 conference presentations. He was a co-author of the NCERT Physics Textbooks for Higher Secondary School Physics and two books on the Physics Olympiad. He was also the chief editor of the Bulletin of the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (1997 - 2001). Besides the Olympiads, Prof. Singh has been on several scholarship panels for young students including the National Talent Science Scheme, the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana, The Times Scholar and the Aditya Birla Scholarship.
The lecture was aimed to enlighten the faculty as well as students of the undergraduate F.Y.B.Sc, S.Y.B.Sc and T.Y.B.Sc) and post-graduate (M.Sc - I and II) classes about the role of golden ratio in physics and aesthetic. Dr. Vijay A. Singh presented the historical references of golden ratio, irrational number, close to 1.61 which is a root of the quadratic equation? x?^2-x-1=0. He enlightened how this number fascinated some of the greatest mathematical minds of all ages, from Pythagoras, Euclidean in ancient Greece to Ramanujan of 20th century. He explained how the golden ratio is the limit of the ratios of successive terms of the Fibonacci sequence (or any Fibonacci-like sequence).
With many examples like Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous painting of Mona Lisa or Vitruvian Man, he illuminated that golden ratio is to aesthetics what p is to mathematics and physics. He mentioned about his research in golden ratio and its relation with center of mass of the body. He demonstrated his recent findings that if one removes a regular even sided polygon from a larger self-similar polygon then the excised polygon can be balanced on the edge provided the ratio of the sides of the larger to the smaller polygon is the golden ratio. He also generalized his finding to other dimension which leads to interesting pattern of equation.
The lecture was attended by more than 125 teachers and students of Mithibai College and other reputed colleges in Mumbai.
- Department of Physics, Mithibai College was centre for National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE-2018) conducted by Indian Association of Physics teachers on 21/01/2018. Sixteen students of Physics department, Mithibai College appeared for the examination, out of which two students ( Rishit Panchal and Manoj Karnekar) cleared examination
Educational Visit to HBCSE- The Department of Physics had organized an educational trip to Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) for 36 students of S.Y.B.Sc (having Physics as one of the subjects) on 12.09.2017 (Tuesday). The visit (which is a component of the S.Y.B.Sc Practical syllabus of Mumbai University) was aimed to make the students aware of innovative experiments designed especially for students participating in International Physics Olympiads. The visit started with a short audio-visual presentation by Prof. Shirish Pathare and his team on all the research activities conducted at HBCSE. The students were then guided to perform some experiments ( optical black box, laser based Michelson interferometer, study of microbes in water using LASER Microscope, surface tension using diffraction technique, Eddy current effect) by the Faculty at HBCSE. Thereafter, the students had to answer two questionnaires which were intended to ascertain their knowledge in specific domains of Physics. The performance of the students was then evaluated by the Faculties of HBCSE and Physics Department, Mithibai College. The visit concluded with demonstration of fascinating experiments based on the theory taught to them. The following teachers guided the students throughout the trip:

Guest lecture on “Theory of nonlinear dynamics and chaos”Resource person: Dr. D S Maske.
- As a part of performance improvement program (PIP), for the benefit of T.Y.B.Sc Physics students, Physics department has organized a guest lecture on “Theory of Nonlinear Mechanics and Chaos” on 16/03/2017. Resource person Dr. D. S. Maske from Ruparel College, Matunga, , Mumbai gave a wonderful talk on Nonlinear mechanics. In this talk, difficult topics like, Numerical solution of Duffing’s equation, Transition to chaos: Bifurcations and strange attractors and Aspects of chaotic behaviour were explained very well. The computer based simulations prepared by Dr. D.S. Maske helped students to understand the Bifurcations and strange attractor concept. All the T.Y.B.Sc Physics students took maximum benefit from this lecture to prepare Chaos topic for semester –VI examination
