As a multidisciplinary applied science, Biotechnology is an amalgam of Genetics, Molecular biology, Recombinant DNA technology, Biochemistry, Neurochemistry, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Cell biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Medical , Industrial, Environmental , Animal, Plant, Pharmaceutical and Nano Biotechnology to name a few. It has a key role to play in the cutting edge Research and Development industry, thus revolutionizing healthcare, food and agriculture sectors.

The Department of Biotechnology at Mithibai College was established in the year 2002. The University of Mumbai started undergraduate course in Biotechnology in the year 2002, and Mithibai College was one of the first colleges to start three year integrated course. The Post Graduate department was started in the year 2007.The Department offers an outstanding learning environment by facilitating the best learning experience possible, the prime objective being, to prepare graduates and post graduate students for challenging careers in the Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, and Biomedical sectors and enable upward mobility for higher study and research in the Biological sciences Industry. We strive to create an academic environment which would match the best Biotechnology Institutes in the world.

The department admits students at F.Y.B.Sc. on the basis of merit with eligibility of the H.S.C. or equivalent examinations.

Presently, there are five teachers actively participating in undergraduate and post-graduate teaching. The department is actively involved in research. Various research projects are undertaken by the staff and post graduate students as part of their curricular and co-curricular activities. The teaching staff of the Department of Biotechnology has been involved in the framing of Syllabi at Under-graduate level.  The Department organizes workshops related to transaction of the curriculum.

The Departmental staff is involved in admission procedure, administrative activities, and cultural, extracurricular and co-curricular activities. The Department of Biotechnology regularly organizes exhibitions namely KALA MELA and BIOTECHNOVA to provide a platform to showcase student’s talent in academic, extracurricular and co-curricular area and for the overall development of students The Department has a library for   students.
